Expand people capability through coaching

MentorKraft2020-07-07T12:20:58+00:00

As a leader in any capacity you have acquired a lot of knowledge and experience. Coaching is the single most important part of expanding not only yours but others capabilities too. I am sure you must have heard this phrase ‘give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime”. That’s coaching! It’s the difference between giving people orders and teaching people how to get things done.

The most effective way to coach is to observe a person in action and then provide specific useful feedback. This feedback should point out examples of behavior and performance that need change.

Master the steps to foster growth:

Know yourself: Most pay a lip service to the idea that leading an organisation requires strength of character. In execution it is absolutely critical. Without the Emotional fortitude you can’t

  • Be honest with yourself
  • Deal honestly with business and organizational realities
  • Provide forthright assessments to people
  • Tolerate diversity of viewpoints
  • Have compassion and love

Emotional fortitude comes from self-discovery and self – mastery that is a foundation of people skill and management.

Authenticity: In psychological term authenticity means ‘you are real, not fake’. Your outer person is the same as your inner person, not a mask that you put on. Only authenticity can build trust, because sooner or later people spot fakers. Whatever leadership ethics you may preach, people will watch what you do, unless authenticity does not sprout from deep within your character it will remain a barrier for growth.

Self-awareness: Know thyself is an advise as old as hills and it is the core of authenticity. When you know yourself you are comfortable with your strengths and not crippled by your shortcomings. Self-awareness gives you capacity to learn from your mistakes as well as your success. It enables you to keep growing… it is again one of the most important traits to nurture in an execution culture.

Self-mastery: When you know yourself you can master yourself and then

  • You can keep your ego in check,
  • Take responsibility of your behavior,
  • Adopt to change with ease
  • Embrace new ideas
  • And adhere to standards of integrity & honesty

Self-confident people contribute mostly to dialogues, as they know they don’t know everything. They are actively curious and bring about the best in all situations. Hence when such people encounter a problem, they don’t have to whine or caste blame or feel like victims. They just know they can fix it.

Humility: The more you contain your ego the more realistic you are about the problem, you learn how to listen and admit that you don’t know all the answers. Humility allows you to acknowledge your mistakes, but good leaders both, admit and learn from them and over time create a decision making process based on experience.

Conclusion: So how do you develop these qualities in yourself? There are, of course books on the subject, some of them are useful. But the ultimate learning comes from paying attention to experience. When people reflect on their experiences, they get coached, blockages crumble and strengths develop.

Such learning’s are not intellectual exercise. It requires TENACITY, PERSISTENCE & DAILY ENGAGEMENT . It also requires reflection and modifying personal behaviour, as the behavior of any leader is ultimately the behavior of the organization.

If convenient do post your view please. Thanks

My time dedicated to your success.

Best,
Seshadri
